Charlie & George threw a winter wedding bash at Ash Barton Estate in Devon, and it was amazing!
I really enjoy photographing winter weddings. Yes they are challenging, with low light, frequent rain and early sunsets plunging you into darkness, but for this exact reasons they are also fun, unpredictable and really atmospheric.
Charlie and George chose to invite their incredible collection of friends and family to Ash Barton Estate in North Devon for their wedding in November. I remember driving in the day before and seeing snow on the moors nearby and wondering, will we get some snow? Sadly we didn’t, but it was bloody cold and we had some spells of rain! Not that it mattered. I think we could have had a hurricane and the party would have still went ahead!
Ash Barton itself is a beautiful grade-II listed manor house set in 25 acres of beautiful grounds. It has it’s own old chapel on the grounds, a huge maze like house bizarrely stuffed full of mirrors and, of course, it has the big barn, otherwise known as the ‘party barn’.
Charlie and George’s day was driven by their close family and friends, and was very much DIY, with a hug effort made to make it the most fun day. There was a palpable community feel in the morning when I arrived, with everyone sharing space and eating together, and getting stuck in to the last minute wedding jobs. After the intimate ceremony in the old chapel, there was much merriment, food and games, and fun times. Everyone braved the cold and rain to venture outside for sparklers and fireworks and then it all culminated with an epic, filled dance floor and a crazy 20-peice orchestra blasting out some amazing music!
